What is Team-Based Learning (TBL)?

01

TBL Benefit 1

TBL has been shown to better improve student attendance, engagement, attainment and progression and has helped narrow attainment gaps in HE. TBL is scalable and designed to develop autonomous learning teams without the need for lots of facilitators.

02

TBL Benefit 2

Students work in in-class teams, actively developing their communication and team-working skills, their skills in critical analysis, as well as their collaborative decision making skills. All skills that help in the workplace

03

TBL Benefit 3

TBL takes a flipped approach with student motivated to come to class prepared through a readiness assurance process meaning that the majority of class time is spent on application of the new knowledge. Students soon develop an accountability to their team and don't want to let the team down.

Testimonials

"It's been a month since our TBL training in Bradford and the impressions are still very vivid. The experience of going through several TBL sequences in the role of the learner impressed me very much and showed me how effective this method is for many aspects of learning. Thank you again for guiding us so well and thus enabling the dissemination of TBL for students in Switzerland and throughout the German-speaking world. I have rarely seen such commitment. I hope that one day I will be able to pass on my experiences.

"I introduced team-based learning (TBL) at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in the Netherlands. We were privileged to engage two international experts on TBL, Professor Simon Tweddell and Dr. Gemma Quinn. Prof. Simon Tweddell gave a convincing lecture on TBL’s proven effectivity in learning. Dr. Gemma Quinn’s workshop on TBL design encouraged ACTA teachers to explore other possibilities such as a poster gallery walk. With the extra help of Prof. Tweddell and Dr. Quinn, TBL is further seeded in the DNA of ACTA teachers and has become an educational form as familiar as giving a lecture or a seminar”
Dr. Teun J. de Vries, Associate Professor at ACTA

The TBL Fundamentals course was a seminal educational experience for me.  I have been involved in education for more than 20 years, and this is the best course I have attended.  The content was comprehensive and relevant, and I felt prepared to design and lead my own TBL sessions after attending.  I was particularly impressed by the delivery of the material, all done in TBL format, which emphasised the advantages of this teaching modality and allowed me to experience the material from a learner’s perspective.  Prof Tweddell and his team were superb, role-modelling effective facilitation brilliantly throughout.  I would highly recommend this to others interested in learning TBL.

Quotes from Students and Educators

I can undoubtedly say that the TBL curriculum has prepared me so well for life as a pharmacist; I have the confidence to communicate with and work with lots of difference team. I can swear by TBLGraduate of a TBL programme

“TBL’s not perfect, but I think it’s far better for student learning, enjoyment and satisfaction, and the same for faculty. It’s much more enjoyable to go into class, even though you’re more vulnerable. There’s more satisfaction in the interactions you have and knowing immediately that students are understanding what you’re talking about and what you want them to learn.” Educator
